Esther and Abel accompany Ion back to Byzantium, the capital of the Empire, but when they arrive they discover a disaster. Ion's grandmother has been killed by mysterious men. Ion manages to kill them, but one of the men's belt sets off a bomb and blows up the Fortuna Estate. Abel notices it just in time and manages to get the two outside.
Once outside, the Janissary attack Ion, accusing him of the deed. Abel manages to set off smoke, and they escape.
Elsewhere, Astharoshe Asran, or Asta, receives a message from the Empress stating that Ion and two escorts will be arriving and that she must guard them. Asta then hears a noise, and throws her glass at it, hitting Abel. Realizing that they are the escorts, she takes them in.
In the bath, Esther and Asta talk about various things, including Abel. Asta notices Esther's tattoo, which Esther says she acquired at birth,
Abel sneaks into the Imperial Palace and talks with the Empress, whom he says is not the real one. The Janissary arrive and attack the intruder, Abel. Abel flees and the Empress tells them to stop, thinking to herself that Abel knows more than a person from the Vatican should.
