In a great cathedral, a vampire drains a man free of blood, letting him fall to the floor. He mutters that somthing has been "Taken care of, Memling-sama". A young nun, unseen by him, terrified, covers her mouth for silence.
Prior, the vatican had sent a unit to Amsterdam. William Wordsworth and Caterina Sforza discuss the agent Sword Dancer and his ties with Amsterdam. They discuss that the four-city alliance that includes amsterdam is being controlled by the Count Four, therefore, it takes someone with local knowledge to move around unnoticed, which the agent seems to have. It is mentioned that personal ties may interfere with the AX agents job, but Caterina says only that Gunslinger will take care of it.
In amsterdam, 3 holograms discuss the situation with an angry - it becomes apparent - vampire. they are worried about the ordeal at the Cathedral and are pressuring the local Count to take care of it before the Vatican involves itself. His name is Karel.
Later that night, the young nun/witness leaves the sactuary of the chapel. A horse and carriage pull up beside her, inquiring if she is Sister Agnes. The man reveals fangs as he comments on her being out alone, following up with saying his brother wants to know abou the incident the other night. She resists as they try to force her into the carriage. A cloaked silhouette appears, telling them to let the Sister go or they'll be killed.
The vampire lunges, insulted, but it blocked by a speed equalling his own, and the strength to match, unehard of from the lowly Terran. The vampire draws a sword and is quickly cut down, the coach driver jumping to his masters side. We still do not see the strangers face.
Karel meets a technician who revelas a large device designed to scan the brain, an retrieve memories not conciously remembered, though dangerous for the subject. The coach driver from before arrives with a cry and a coffin. As Karel attacks him, demanding to know why his brother is dead, the coach driver can only speak of a caped man with incredible strength. Karel orders that the Sister and her protecter be brough to him no matter he cost.
Sister Agnes wakes up suddenly. Alone, she seeks her companion, and finds him poised in an incredible stance before the altar. He is a blond bare-chested man, and he stood on one hand, his weapon held out to his side; his skin is laced all over with scars. When asked, he reveals that he is "Hugue, a travelling priest."
Checking his communicator in a storage room, Hugue learns from Sister Kate that the one he killed was Peter van der Wulf, Karel's younger brother. He sees Agnes pass by outside the window and races out, weapon in hand. She's been grabbed by a tall henchman, a gun to her head; the vampire coachman tells Hugue that Karel summons him as well.
In Karel's gorgeous mansion, he tells Agnes that his people didn’t commit the attack in the cathedral. She agrees to be submitted to the memory device: she and Karel are both fastened into it, and he hears what she heard: "it's been taken care of, Memlink-sama." He thanks Agnes for saving him, gives orders for someone to take her home; she ends up staying to see what will become of Father Hugue.
They enter a large room, where many vampires/Terran Nobility are eating, and reveal that tonight's show will be the eecution of a vatican dog. Hugue is revealed in the middle of an arena, unarmed, his hands chained. A barred gate opens, and into the arena stalks a shadowy, wolflike monster with glowing eyes. It crouches, streaks away so fast it blurs out of sight, rematerializes on the wall. As it charges him Hugue flips into the air, vaults over its back and comes down with his wrist shackle between its jaws--it throws him off but breaks the chain, freeing his hands.
Agnes, watching as Father Hugue is pinned, races back to the salon, grabs Hugue's weapon from the caught-off-guard coachman tosses it into the arena. Karel runs a knife through her for interfering, sending her gold cross flying as Hugue watches.
There's a roar and a tremendous crash in the arena, and Hugue is standing over the body of the monster in a spreading pool of blood. Hugue turns and draws the strange weapon--it pulls apart rather than coming unsheathed, and we finally see that it's a dual set of staffs with a blade in each end. He scales the arena in one quick move with one of the staffs, killing Karel.
And Agnes wakes up in the convent dorm alone, again. Hugue has left, but her lost cross is beside her.
